Gilmer Historical Society & Museum Announcement

Article submitted by Wayne Hooper
“Build It and they will come!” A famous line from the movie “Field of Dreams”. The Gilmer Co. Museum decided to follow that train of thought. The museum struggled with a focus point, other than saving the 1870 Tabor House, the oldest dwelling in Ellijay. The program has been sustained through the efforts of the volunteers and donations. The museum recently reorganized its displays to clearly focus on what we can show case for Gilmer Co. We now have a Civil War library and reference area, with artifacts on loan from patrons, plus a Native American room that focuses on the Coosa Kingdom (Creek) and Cherokee artifacts. The Indian displays are attracting comments and stories of Indian artifacts found in the area. Strangely, many of the projectile points found are from 3,000 to 6,000 years old when the area had a different climate. flora and fauna. We want to see more artifacts found by the public that we might display. Call the museum at 706-276-1861 to discuss your finds or bring it by the museum for ” show and tell”.

The other rooms in the Tabor house feature the typical furniture and kitchen items found in an 1870’s farm home , plus medical and dental items of the period.

The dining room of the Tabor House now serves a farm fresh lunch with locally owned grown produce in order to defray some of the maintenance cost of the house. Jane Hayden features locally grown produce on her revolving menu which changes daily. You can find some amazing taste combinations that make a lunch or dinner a real treat.

Phone the Tabor House Museum to determine what’s on menu or to make a reservation for a group at 706-276-1861 or 770-855-3754.
