Lady Cats Softball Season Ends

The Gilmer High School Lady Cats softball season came to a close in Carrollton at the hands of the Lady Trojans. The Lady Cats fell in a 2-0 sweep in the second round of the State AAAA playoffs. It was the first time that Gilmer High School’s softball team made the “Sweet Sixteen.”Despite finishing with a sub .500 regular season record (12-14) the Lady Cats clobbered the competition in the Region 7-AAAA tournament, reaching the championship round unscathed. A 2-0 loss to Heritage in the finals cemented the Lady Cats place as Region Runner Up. Due to the second place finish Gilmer hosted White County in the first round of the playoffs.

The Lady Cats whitewashed the White County, sweeping the Lady Warriors with two blow out victories, 10-0 and 9-2. The sweep set up the aforementioned first ever “Sweet Sixteen” match up with the Lady Trojans, who swept Chamblee with two shut out victories, 8-0 and 18-0.

The Lady Cats and Lady Trojans battled to a scoreless six innings in game one, until Kaylee “TJ” Deyton scored in the top of the seventh to take a 1-0 lead into the bottom of the inning; however, the Lady Trojans’ last at bat proved to be beneficiary as the Lady Trojans scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to take game one.

Game two saw the Lady Trojans take an early lead that the Lady Cats could not overcome, as Gilmer faced a 3-0 deficit after two. The deficit increased to three after three, despite a Lady Cat run scored.

By the bottom of the sixth, the Lady Cats’ deficit was six, 9-3. Despite scoring four runs in the last two innings, Gilmer fell 10-7, ending the season in the “Sweet Sixteen.”
