Unfortunately, the recent tragic murders of a Cobb County couple who were attempting to purchase a vehicle from a seller on Craigslist has brought to light the importance of using extreme caution when making any online transactions. Sheriff Nicholson wants all citizens to know that their safety is of utmost concern to the Gilmer County Sheriff’s Office.Therefore, we want our citizens to know that they are always welcome to utilize the Gilmer County Detention Center as a public meeting place located approximately four miles out Hwy. 52 East at 106 Brett Dickey Memorial Drive. It is well lit with plenty of parking. Often times, suggesting the Sheriff’s Office as a meeting location may deter criminal activity and can help keep you safe.
When meeting someone for the first time, we strongly suggest:
*INSIST on meeting in a public place.
*DO NOT meet in a secluded place or invite strangers into your home.
*Be especially careful when buying/selling high-value items.
*Tell a friend or family member where you are going or consider having a friend accompany you.
*Take your cell phone along if you have one.
*Trust your instincts.
