Lady Cats Rout Red Raiders 55-33

The Gilmer High School Lady Cats basketball team, the number one seed from Region 7-AAAA, hosted a first round state playoff game versus the Lady Red Raiders of Madison County, the number four seed from Region 8. The Lady Cats clobbered Madison County, routing the Red Raiders 55-33.The game began with both team’s playing tight tenacious defense, the first basket came via Megan Flowers after a Bailey Charles assist, with after over two minutes of play. With the game tied 4-4 with 5:06 left in the first quarter, the Lady Cats clawed out a 10-1 run that gave Gilmer 14-5 lead with 3:05 left in the first.

The patented pressing pressure Gilmer defense made a strong showing during the run; however, the Red Raiders ran off a 7-2 run, cutting the lead to 16-12. As Madison made waves through the Lady Cats’ pressing paws, Gilmer head coach, Kim Charles, pulled back the press and packed the paint with various zone defenses. The Cats closed the quarter leading by six, 20-14.

Emily Sanford opened up the second quarter scoring with a three that pushed the lead to nine. The Lady Cats’ collapsing of the paint proved productive, as the Gilmer lead doubled by half time to 12, 32-20.

The third quarter opened with Lady Cats collecting careless turnovers throughout the first few minutes of the quarter; however, due to diligent defense, and timely defensive rebounds the Lady Cats’ led 41-29 going into the fourth before cruising to a 55-33 victory.

Sanford led the Lady Cats with 15 points, she also had seven rebounds, four defensive, with two assists and two steals. Hannah Jones finished with 10 points seven rebounds, five defensive, two assists and two steals as well. Megan Flowers finished with nine points, three assists and a block. Bailey Charles also finished with nine points, six rebounds, five defensive, five assists and three steals.

Kaylee “TJ” Deyton led all rebounders with eight, four defensive. She finished with five points, two assists and a block. Megan Allen had six points, five rebounds, three defensive, and a block.

The Lady Cats, will next host Monroe, on Friday Feburary 20th at 6:00pm.
