Nation On Knees

It truly is a powerful feeling a journalist receives at certain points in his or her career. Moments that resonate or allow a sense of clarity as a person in addition to a journalist.These moments are often hard for a journalist to put into words. As I sat in the Jury Assembly Room in the Gilmer County Courthouse just after noon on May 7th, there was only one word I could think of to help me to grasp the meaning of what was occurring on this National Day of Prayer.

Devotion.

I wanted to interview people to see what prayer they offered, why they prayed, or even who they were praying for? Yet, it was the words of Police Chief Edward Lacey, the guest speaker, which explained away my need to question. Speaking about a national need to offer prayer to God for not only each other, and not only the politician’s and Government officials we like, but for those we disagree with. Those we don’t “want” to pray for. It is devotion to the nation and to those who sacrifice for it. Chief Lacey offered these words urging that prayer is for all of those who need it.

It is devotion to the ideals and love of our fellow man that requires this support for those who serve in the military, who sacrifice their lives for the nation by leaving their family behind and serving.

It is devotion to the people that requires this encouragement for our public servants, be they police, fire, medical, or rescue services, that drives this day of prayer.

A point occurred as I stood at the back of the room when I realized, reading through the brochure explaining 7 key areas of the nation that require daily prayer, that I was on this list. Listening to soft mutterings all around me, I felt the prayers these people offered to those in the media, and on behalf of Fetch Your News and all the journalists in Gilmer County and the nation, I offer two things.

One, thank you for your encouragement, your love, and your support. Thank you for your prayer.

Second, I offer a verse from 1 Thessalonians, “Pray continually.”
