Mrs. Kertie Mae Chastain Newman, 89, passed away peacefully on July 7, 2015, at home in Winston-Salem, NC. Mrs. Newman was born March 30, 1926 in Ellijay, GA to the late Harley Andrew Chastain and Myrtle Bell Zona Dotson Chastain. Until age 82, she lived in Ellijay, where she attended school and church, worked, and raised her family. Mrs. Newman left school early to help with her family’s farm and gristmill, and one of her favorite memories was of helping her brother Andrew plow with a steer. All who knew “Kertie Mae” will remember a strong woman who was most proud of having reared her nine children. She had a great sense of humor and found time to play, even while she worked full time and cared for her family. She was the family’s reigning Chinese Checkers champion and most recently enjoyed teaching the game to her great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Newman was preceded in death by her husband Ervin Newman, by her first and former husband, Elbert C. Weaver, and by her second husband, Bloomer Brown Holloway; by two brothers, David Chastain and Andrew Chastain, and four sisters, Elzie Chastain Long, Daisy Chastain Long, Dora Chastain Teague,and Mildred Chastain Lowman; and by a son, Joe Holloway.
She is survived by one sister, Rilla Chastain Welch Nelson of Ellijay, GA; eight children, Charlotte Weaver Shaw (Ralph) of Clayton, NC, Harley Elbert Weaver (Laurie) of Milledgeville, GA, Polly Weaver Little (C.M.) of Cumming, GA, Norman B. Holloway (Glenda) of Cherry Log, GA, Dorothy B.“Dottie” Holloway of Sandersville, GA, James N. Holloway (Susan)of Ellijay, GA, Mary Holloway Jones (Randell) of Winston-Salem, NC, and Gary L. Holloway (Teresa) of Ellijay, GA; a special niece, Betty Chastain Cantrell of Ellijay, GA; 15grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; twelve great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services will be held Sunday July 12th at 2pm from the Chapel of Bernhardt Funeral Home with Rev. Sanford Fountain officiating. Interment will follow in the East New Hope Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday July 11th from 4pm until 8pm at the funeral home.
