BOE Talks Facilities Again At Work Session

Monday Night’s Work Session, Sept 14, started with a $25,500 check to the Board of Education by Parrish Construction to deliver Project Savings back to the Board from their recent construction projects.

Though the Board was presented with a giant “check”, what this amounts to is basically what Parrish Construction came in under budget with. Though at this time it is unclear exactly how the check works out, be it just a reduction in the final payment from the BOE to the Company or if it is actually a refund chuck, I do know that I would definitely want to see who would be the one carrying a 4-feet-long check into a bank in the morning.

Continuing along through the Finance and Nutrition reports, the Board spent most of the meeting continuing with facilities discussion.

Principal Eric McFee offered a presentation to ask the Board to allow the Touchdown Club to install a small “Church-style-kitchen” in the field house, room 40-109, to help feed student athletes in all sports that would use the field. This would range from soccer to football to the band as they need the facility. The Touchdown club is offering to pay for the installation and renovation for the kitchen. This became somewhat of a key proponent and driving force for the proposal that, though the Touchdown Club would renovate it, the facility would be available for all the entities in need of it.

The only cost the Board would incur with this installation would be the electricity and other such bills as the facilities are used. However, this kitchen would require one of the three locker rooms to be converted. The student displaced by this would then use the football locker room due to the locker room being unused at those times.

Moving further into facilities, the Board also addressed proposals offered for Surveyors and At Risk Construction.

Dr. Wilkes suggested she would be recommending Mark Chastain as the Surveyor for the field renovations, who also was the lowest proposal.

For At Risk Construction, which has allows the board to look at qualifications of a company in addition to bids and proposals, four proposals were offered at the meeting including: Parrish Construction Group, Carroll Daniel Construction, R.K. Redding Construction, Inc., and Charles Black Construction Company, Inc.

In continuation of the past months, the Board is still processing for consideration policy changes set into first and second readings. Three policies were revised so significantly after their previous first reading that they were resubmitted for another first reading at the work session including: GAAA Equal Opportunity Employment, GAK(1) Criminal Background Check, and GAMA Drug-Free Workplace.

Submitted for first reading were DJ Expenditure of Funds, DJB Petty Cash Accounts, DJCA Pay Day Schedules, DJCB Salary Deductions, DJE Purchasing, DJEA Purchasing Authority, IDFC Community Coaches.

Submitted for second reading were EE Food Services Management and GAK Personal Records.
