Arthur L. Hill, 91, of Athens, TN passed away Wednesday evening, February 10, 2016 at Morning Pointe in Athens.
He was born in Gilmer County, Georgia and was a son of the late Lawrence and Ethel Gates Hill. He was also preceded in death by a daughter Carol Srymanske and her husband Jay Wesley Srymanske.
He joined the U.S. Army and proudly served in World War II and the Korean Conflict, retiring in 1984 as a Major. After graduating from the University of Georgia he began a career in the firearms industry, allowing him to pursue his lifelong passion of shooting and hunting. In 1968, after years of competing in the Army and as a civilian, he earned the Distinguished Pistol Shot Badge.
At age 76 he retired and spent more time gardening, hunting and fishing; always eager to share the harvest with family and friends.
Arthur is survived by his wife of 66 years, Bess Gudger Hill of Athens; two daughters and one son-in-law, Sarah and Dr. Chris Maynard of Athens and Annette Anderson of Blue Ridge, GA; a son and daughter-in-law, David and Susan Hill of British Columbia, Canada; six grandchildren, Chris Maynard, Amanda Pacheco, Connor Hill, Roy Srymanske, Drew Anderson and David Anderson; and five great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on Sunday, February 14th at Bernhardt’s Funeral Home in Elijay, Georgia. The family will receive friends at 1:00 PM prior to the service. Friends and family are invited to a reception at North Georgia Medical Center Community room 334 Industrial Blvd Ellijay after the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the E.G. Fisher Public Library, 1289 Ingleside Avenue, Athens, TN 37303 or your local library.
