Lady Cats, Bobcats Kickoff Soccer Campaign

The Gilmer High School varsity soccer teams kickstarted their season last week, with matches on the road against the Sonoraville Phoenix and the North Murray Mountaineers.

Lady Cats

The girls dropped their season opener at Sonoraville, 5-0. However, the Lady Cats recovered the next day and bested the North Murray Mountaineers 1-0. Autumn Durham scored the lone goal in the contest, after intercepting a second half pass from North Murray.

“The girls played really hard and did a lot of things really well,” said head Lady Cats coach April Nicholson. “We possessed the ball 99 percent of the first half and we took a lot of shots on goal, but we couldn’t get the ball in the back of the net. We had a hard loss to Sonoraville on Thursday; the girls were out of their routine from the snow days, so it was great to see them playing up to their potential.”

Bobcats

Although the boys scored in both contests against Sonoraville and North Murray, they were unable to stop the Phoenix and the Mountaineers. The Bobcats fell 3-1 to Sonoraville, with Arutro Bernabe netting the goal for Gilmer. The Cats then fell 4-1 to North Murray, with Rodrigo Casas securing the goal for GHS.

“(It was) The toughest, most physical game I have ever seen played at high school level,” said head Bobcats coach Simon Phipps said in regards to the Sonoraville match. “The boys never gave up. The game was a lot closer than the final score suggests.”

Phipps added about the North Murray affair, “(It was) A tough, fast paced game against a very well organized team. The boys started slowly
and took a while to get into the game. I was pleased with the second half performance, which ended very evenly.”

Gilmer will host the Heritage Generals in region action tomorrow. All home games this season are being played at Clear Creek Middle School. The Lady Cats will get things underway at 5 p.m., with the Bobcats following after.
