Johnnie D. Ellington, 84, of Ellijay, passed away Monday February 6, 2017 after losing her battle with cancer. She was born June 29, 1932, to the late Bass and Georgia Dickens Doster, in Walton County.

She graduated from Monroe High School in 1949. Following graduation, she went to work at Belk’s In Monroe, Georgia for 5 years. She then moved to Atlanta and worked for Atlanta Dairies Accounting Department, where she worked for 40 years and retired in 1994, but remained very active in the community.

Johnnie and husband Horace moved from Stone Mountain to Ellijay in 1999 to be closer to their daughter Ginger and husband Mike. Even though Johnnie had a lot of responsibilities, she still took time to do the Lord’s work. She was a senior citizen director at 2 churches. In the early 1980s, she sang with the Calvary Echoes Quartet and sang at many churches, several weddings and lots of funerals. Johnnie was also a poet and wrote many poems, three of which won awards. She sang at Mountaintown Baptist Church for many years, until a decline in her health.

Johnnie is preceded in death by her husband Horace, who passed away on September 11, 2015; and parents, Bass and Georgia Doster. She is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Ginger and Mike Epperson, of Ellijay; granddaughter and husband, Stefani and Travis Grindstaff, of Dawsonville; two great granddaughters, Zoe and Taylor Grindstaff, also of Dawsonville; sister, Wanda Barton, of Stone Mountain; several nieces and nephews; and special friends Kim Harbuck, Carol Davis, the Brinkley’s and many other wonderful friends and neighbors. Johnnie will not be forgotten. Her devotion to family, enthusiasm for life, giving and sharing with the community, talents, accomplishments, and even her sense of humor will be remembered and cherished by everyone who knew her.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 12 noon from the chapel of Bernhardt Funeral Home with Rev. George Barnett and Rev. Tom Deal officiating. Interment will be at 4:00pm in the Lawnwood Memorial Park in Covington.

The family will meet with friends Wednesday from 3:00pm until 7:00pm at the funeral home.

Flowers are accepted or donations may be made to Mountaintown Baptist Church 510 Mountaintown Rd. Ellijay, GA 30540 in memory of Mrs. Ellington.The family request no food be brought to the funeral home.
