Mr. James “Jim” Alvin Gudger, age 98 of Ellijay, GA passed on Thursday morning, August 31st, 2017 at Piedmont Mountainside Hospital in Jasper, GA.
Mr. Gudger was born August 14th, 1919 in Ellijay, GA to his late parents William Henry Gudger and Lilly Belle Osborn Gudger. He served his country honourably in the United States Army Air Corps during WWII, and was stationed at various times in Egypt, Tunisia, Sicily, Corsica, Palestine, and Italy. He was a member of the Mountaintown Baptist Church. Jim worked for the Gilmer Tax Office for ten years, taught school at Pleasant Gap for two years, and worked as a mail carrier for the United States Post Office. He is preceded in death by his son-in-law, Richard Davenport, grandson, William “Will” Gudger, and siblings John Gudger, Nina Crawford, Nena Mahan, Ruth Roberts, Mari Nell Dover, Gwen Edwards, Lorena Gudger, Howard Gudger, and Don Gudger.
Survivors include his wife of 70 years, Opal Davis Gudger of the home in Ellijay, GA; daughter, Janet Gudger Davenport of Ellijay, GA; sons and daughters-in-law, Ronald and Sharon Gudger of Dunwoody, GA and Robert and Marianne Gudger of Ellijay, GA; grandchildren, Kimberly Clerici, Brent Davenport, Jonathan Gudger, Seth Gudger, Caroline Gudger, and Ethan Gudger; great grandchildren, Kendall Clerici, Morgan Clerici and Brooklyn Clerici; sister-in-law, Dorothy “Dot” Gudger of Lawrenceville, GA also survives.
Funeral services will be held at 4pm on Saturday, September 2nd, 2017 from the chapel of Logan Funeral Home with Rev. George Barnett officiating. Music and vocals will be by Larry Davis, Vic Davis, the Davis Trio, and Kim Meyers. Military graveside rites will immediately follow in the Logan Funeral Home Pavilion and will be performed by the North GA Honor Guard. Graveside interment will follow in the Mountaintown Baptist Church Cemetery with Jonathan Gudger, Seth Gudger, Ethan Gudger, Brent Davenport, Don Clarici and Doug Hall serving as pallbearers.
Family will receive friends from 4pm until 9pm on Friday, September 1st, 2017 at the Logan Funeral Home.
Flowers are acceptable, or donations may be made to the Mountaintown Baptist Church, 510 Mountaintown Road, Ellijay, GA 30540 in memory of Mr. Gudger.
