Lady Cats Volleyball Can’t Dig Up Win

Team FYN Sports

Last week saw the Lady Cats Varsity and Junior Varsity volleyball teams hit the court in action almost to fast for the eyes to see.  The JV competed in both match and tournament competition with the Varsity finishing up a season that has shown them struggle but get better with every whistle.

The JV faced Southeast Whitfield, Ridgeland, Pickens and Fannin in regular season action going 2 and 3 in those matches.  Southeast Whitfield hosted a sub-varsity tournament that had the younger Lady Cats come out of pool play as the 4 seed.  Having to play the 1 seed in bracket was a tough challenge.  Even though Gilmer JV took the match to a deciding game, Sonoraville edged out the Lady Cats 2 games to 1 and ended the JV’s route to the tournament title.

The varsity also hit the court with a few really tough opponents in Southeast Whitfield and Rideland. Gilmer took 2 straight games over Southeast with scores of 25-23 and 25-19.  Working hard and putting up good numbers were:

ACES: Hope Colewell-5, Beth Burnette-3, Hannah Watkins and Emma Callihan with 1 each.

KILLS:  Elly Callihan-5, MaryLee Callihan-4, Emma Dayton-3, Elyza Dantin with 2

Blocks: Elly Callihan-3, Emma Dantin with 1

ASSIST: Emma-7 and Beth-3

DIGS: Emma C.-14, Hope-13, MaryLee-6

In the second match the Lady Cats faced Ridgeland.  In the 3 game match Gilmer fell short 2 games to 1(25-19,1-25,14-25). Stats for the Ridgeland match were

ACES: Colewell-3, MaryLee Callihan and Burnette with 2 each, Watkins-1

KILLS: Elly Callihan-9, Dantin and Dayton with 3 each, Emma Callihan, Burnette and MaryLee Callihan had 2 each.

BLOCKS: Dayton-3, Elly Callihan-2

ASSIST: Emma Callihan-12, Burnette-3

DIGS: MAryLee Callihan-10, Burnette and Emma Callihan had 8 each, Colewell with 7.

The Lady Cats hit the Courts again on the 20th when they traveled to Fannin for a tri-match with the Rebels and the Dragons of Pickens.
