The Gilmer Arts Center hosted an art show this weekend to spotlight local and visiting artists. The Art Gallery located on 207 Dalton Street in downtown Ellijay sponsors a monthly art show. This show titled “Blackberry Creek” featured artists from the Blackberry Creek Studios and Galleries along with several local artists. The front lobby normally hosts the visiting artist and their work.

The back lobby is reserved for the local artist and members of Gilmer Arts. This past show was held Friday evening from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. spotlighted many new artists as well as old. The gallery will continue the display of artwork through the end of August. A couple of the artists who exhibited their artwork from last month.

Artist Catherine Ritch had several of pieces on display. Her specialty is oil on linen. Her art was a hit with the visitors who attended.

Joann Keller who painted a beautiful outdoor depiction of bright yellow kayaks was also there at the reception. Artist Lynn Mayes exhibited some large oil paintings depicting soft yellow and blue flowers.

Sheila Carey, a local artist, could not attend but had two of her large paintings on display, one of a pink flamingo and another of a magnificent horse with an ocean background.

In addition to enjoying the beautiful artwork, the gallery served some refreshments and glasses of wine for those in attendance.

The gallery has a small store inside where many of the beautiful original pieces from jewelry, paintings, and greeting cards may be purchased.

Gilmer Arts operates the Gilmer Playhouse where many off-Broadway shows can be seen. Additionally, Gilmer Arts sponsors several classes such as Latin Dance, Stained glass classes, piano classes, yoga, and more. To participate in the classes or art shows, one must be a member of the Gilmer Arts where memberships start at only $15 for students, $35 for an individual, or $60 for a family.

They offer some free events for everyone such as storytellers, songwriters, and poets, and on every third Friday acoustic blends can be heard on stage at the playhouse. For more info contact Gilmerarts.com.
