Disturbing Social Media Trend

PRESS RELEASE-
Parents and Guardians,
We want to make you aware of a disturbing trend circulating on social media platforms that is instructing and encouraging students to modify their Chromebook computers in a manner that causes the lithium batteries to smoke, catch fire and possibly explode. The results of this activity are extremely dangerous to both the health and safety of students. Aside from the immediate risk of fire and noxious smoke, these alterations can cause the lithium batteries to smolder for hours before ignition at home or in vehicles.
The Gilmer County School System takes this type of dangerous and destructive behavior seriously. Students engaging in this type of vandalism will be disciplined in accordance with the Code of Conduct of the Gilmer County School System with consequences ranging from suspension to permanent expulsion. Parents will be expected to pay full restitution for all damages prior to walking at graduation and charges ranging from misdemeanor disruption to felony arson will be filed with law enforcement.
Our intent is to keep our students safe and protect the property of Gilmer County taxpayers. We ask that you reinforce with your child the importance of avoiding these activities. The dangers are immense and the consequences will be severe.
Thank you for your partnership in protecting our students.
