Ellijay, Ga. — October 3, 2025
The Gilmer Bobcats fell on the road Friday night, dropping a 29–14 decision to the Heritage Generals in a key Region 7-AAA matchup.
Heritage running back Brayden Slaughter proved to be the difference-maker, breaking loose for 185 yards and two touchdowns on just 16 carries. His 69-yard scoring run midway through the second quarter gave the Generals a double-digit lead they never relinquished.
Gilmer (3–3, 0–2 region) battled early, moving the ball effectively on its opening drive and keeping pace through most of the first half. But a pair of defensive breakdowns allowed Heritage to seize momentum. The Generals’ offensive line controlled the trenches, paving the way for more than 250 rushing yards on the night.
The Bobcats struggled to find rhythm in the passing game, finishing with just 12 yards through the air. Gilmer leaned on its ground attack, but consistent penetration from Heritage’s front seven kept the Bobcats from breaking many big plays.
Despite the loss, head coach Paul Standard’s squad showed flashes of toughness — particularly on defense late in the game, forcing a turnover and stringing together several stops in the fourth quarter. But by then, Heritage had already built a comfortable cushion.
The defeat marks Gilmer’s second straight loss after a 3–1 start to the season. The Bobcats will look to bounce back this Friday when they return home to face LaFayette.
Meanwhile, Heritage improved to 4–2 overall, winning its third game in the last four outings and climbing further into region contention.
For Gilmer, the focus now turns to regrouping. With several region games left, there’s still time to make a playoff push — but the Bobcats will need to tighten up on run defense and find a spark offensively to get back on track.
