Virginia Beach, VA- The 34th Annual National High School Coaches Association High School National Tournament was held this past weekend at the Virginia Beach Sports Center in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

Gilmer County’s own Taylor Schiesser earned the opportunity to compete in the event. and she made the most out of her opportunity as she came back to Georgia with a 4th place finish and the title of All-American. The grueling three-day event featured the top wrestlers from across the entire country on their quest to be named a high school All-American.

Taylor started the tournament wrestling Mallory Ladd from Alabama. It was a quick win with a pin in the first period in 54 seconds. Taylor secures her next win in the quarter finals against Jocelyn Cacek from Maryland by a 9-2 decision. She guarantees All-American status with the win in the quarter finals.

In the sesemi-finalsTaylor wrestles Kylee Musard from Maryland. Musard got two early takedowns in the first period with Taylor getting the escape for both takedowns. Taylor ends the first period with a takedown and chooses bottom to start the second period. Taylor gets the escape and gives up a stalling point but returns with a takedown with 30 seconds left in the period. Going into the third period the score is 7-5, Taylor is in the lead. The third period starts in neutral with Musard getting an early takedown then finishing with a pin at 4:19 and sends Taylor into the consolation-semis to wrestle back for third place.

Taylor wrestles Kyree Rubio from California in the consolation-semis. The match starts out slow without a score in the first period. Taylor starts the second period on top and Rubio gets the reversal and a 3-point near fall to put 5 points on the board. The third period starts with the wrestlers in neutral. Taylor gets a takedown and pins Rubio at 3:21.

On the third and final day, Taylor faced Destiny Marquez from California in the 3rd place match. Marquez wins the match 5-2 which results in Taylor bringing home 4th place.

Taylor is the first girl in Gilmer County to bring home All American status. Last year she earned All American twice, to make this her 3rd All American title. It was not the result she wanted but she kept the bobcat spirit and kept grinding away to beat 12 other girls in the bracket. Taylor will travel to West Virginia to Viper Pit Duals and Individuals with her travel team Charlie’s Angels to see what more she can do.

Macon County, GA- Over the weekend, high school wrestlers from all over the state of Georgia gathered at the Macon Centreplex in Macon, Georgia to compete in the Georgia High School Association Traditional State Wrestling championships. As always Gilmer had a slew of wrestlers that advanced to the state meet, as they bussed down 7 men and 5 women to their respective State Finals.

Before we get into the individual results, here’s what Head Men’s Coach Joshua Ghobadpoor had to say about his guys:

“STATE CHAMPIONS!!! We never lost faith, we never gave up, and we did it together as a TEAM and a FAMILY. What an unbelievable accomplishment for this team, these wrestlers, and these coaches. This is for all the ones we love and the support they give us no matter what happens. I personally would like to dedicate it to my boys Reacher and Rocky. Now 19x State Wrestling Champions your Gilmer Bobcats!”

While the men’s team won their 19th state championship, the women’s team did an outstanding job coming in tied for second as they had 4 of their 5 wrestlers standing on the podium at the end of the tournament, including State Champion Taylor Schiesser!
