Pool Opening Re-Scheduled (6.14)

Update 6.14:The opening of the Gilmer County pool has been delayed due to a clogged valve on the pool floor.

Gilmer County Pool (6.14)

Jim Smith, of the Gilmer Board of Commissioners office, took the time to explain the latest holdup to me this morning. A piece of hardware called a hydrostatic valve, located on the floor of the deep end near the main drains, has apparently been clogged by debris. The valve is designed to prevent the pressure of groundwater underneath the pool from damaging the pool structure.

The valve mechanism has been clogged with debris, and therefore is not sealing, as it is intended to, by the weight of the pool water. The pool repair company, Sunbelt Pools, is sending a diver to the site to repair it today.

Mr. Smith is hopeful the problem can be fixed today. Otherwise, the pool is looking great.

Update 6.8:The opening of the Gilmer County pool has been delayed until at least this Monday, June the 13th (press release follows).

Plaster repair work on the pool floor, the last step of the project, will not be dry in time for the previously scheduled opening date. According to Gilmer County representative Jim Smith, once the plaster is dry and the pool has been filled, the pool chemical content must be approved by the Environmental Protection Agency. Mr. Smith said these last few steps of the project should not cause further delays.

The pool is currently scheduled to be open Monday through Saturday from noon to 5:30pm and Sundays from 2pm to 5:30pm. Daily admission is 3$; for toddlers, 1$.
