Current “Cats” Clean Sweep of Alumni

The former Gilmer High School Bobcats basketball players faced off against the current “Cats” in the annual alumni basketball games. The current “Cats” swept the alums with the Lady Bobcats beating the alumni team 73-50 and the Boys beating the men, which included, current head coach, Jordan Hice, 80-61.The evening began with the the Lady “Cats” Scholarship Committee awarding 10 scholarships to former players. All 10 applicants received scholarship money.

The Lady “Cats” game began with the Bobcat elders breaking the 0-0 tie with a free throw; however Britton Farlow and Jenna Parks hit back to back threes and the current “Cats” clawed to a 6-1 lead.

Head coach, Herb Horton’s, highly pressurized defense proved to be too much for the alumni team, which featured a total of eight players. The youth ran out to a 24-10 end of first quarter lead.

Horton’s constant subbing, often times, five players at a time, ground the more mature ladies down, as the high schoolers led 38-29 at half-time.

The lead increased to 17, 57-40 at the end of the third; however, the alums made a run and cut the lead to 59-50 with just over three minutes left in the game.

Coach Horton strongly reminded his team, that he wanted the young “Cats” to continue competing. The young Lady Bobcats responded with a 14-0 run to secure the 73-50 win.

The boys’ game began with current “Cat” Connor Webber’s break away steal and lay up. The alumni responded with a three from current “Cats” coach, Hice. The high schoolers responded with a 13-2 run that caused the alumni to call a time out with 4:05 left in the first quarter. It did not help, as the Bobcats’ blow out began. The current “Cats” led 25-9 at the end of the first quarter.

The alumni were not able to close the gap, despite some deep shooting from Hice, who picked up the game’s one and only technical foul.

The alumni did cut the lead to nine, 44-35, at half time. The lead was increased by three by the end of the third; however, the game truly got out of hand in the fourth as the Bobcat boys, cruised to a 80-61 win over their older counterparts.
