Could Gilmer County Be Headed for a Government Shut Down?

News

County Commissioners spent 2 hours yesterday trying to figure out how to cut another $1.5 million from the budget. They could not reach a decision on whether to cut county department salaries another 10% to prevent layoffs or just cut jobs. Commissioner Beattie expressed that many county employees had already been cut to minimum wage. Commissioner Hall expressed he didn’t like pay cuts but he was just trying to save peoples jobs, “just to have a job at this time is like having a wage increase.”

One thing all agreed on yesterday was to stop all overtime and promotion pay increases. There was $10,000 in overtime and 3 promotion pay increases in the last pay period.

There was much discussion in the 2 hour meeting, mainly focused on the budget. Check back here at fetchyournews.com for more developments on this story and see what Sheriff Nicholson’s comments were concerning further budget cuts.
