Bobcats Experience Pain of Purple Reign

The Gilmer High School Bobcats girls’ and boys’ basketball teams hosted the Purple Hurricanes of Cartersville. Cartersville was 2-0 on the day, beating the Lady “Cats” 67-49 and the Bobcats 56-52 in a come from behind victory.The Lady “Cats” were down early, falling behind by 12, 17-5, in the first, and never recovered. The lead increased to 21, 37-16 at the half. The Hurricane ladies, came harder than “Katrina” en route to the aforementioned 67-49 dismantling of the home team. Brittany Lowman led the Lady “Cats” with 14 points.
The Bobcat boys, also struggled early, falling behind 15-9 at the end of the first; however, a furious second quarter rally, which featured the home team outscoring the visitors, 20-3, saw the Bobcats take a 29-18 lead into half time.
The momentum gained in the second quarter did not carry into the second half, as the Purple Hurricanes, rained on the Bobcats’ parade. Aided by a technical foul issued against the Bobcats, for a half time warm up dunk, dunking is not allowed during warm ups, Cartersville rallied to take a 41-35 lead into the final quarter.
The Bobcats cut the lead to one, 53-52, with less than 20 second left in the game, on an Austin White lay up; however, a curious call changed the complexion of the games waning seconds.
Bobcat, Connor Webber’s steal of a Cartersville inbound pass, was followed by Webber bouncing the ball off the Cartersville player, and the ball was by all indication awarded to the home team. However, after Gilmer head coach, Jordan Hice, called time out, the ball was awarded to the Purple Hurricanes, resulting in an understandable upset Hice, and home crowd.
As a result of the hullabaloo a technical foul was assessed on a Bobcat, and three free throws later, the Purple Hurricanes reigned supreme, with a 56-52 win. Gilmer’s, Ryan Lowery, led the Bobcats with 18 points.
