The eighth annual “Capture the Cup” flag football tournament commenced Saturday, April 28th and a new champion, “Ciroc Boys” was crowned. The Ciroc Boys beat “Comma to the Top” 27-26 in overtime to “Capture the Cup” and claim the championship. The “Capture the Cup” tournament is a non profit event that raises money for Gilmer’s graduating seniors. Zach Henderson, founder and head of the tournament, expounded on the history of the roots of the tournament.

“For the first three years, it was a fundraiser for Relay for Life. In 2008, my friend Douglas West was killed in a car accident. His friends and family, along with myself, started a foundation in his memory/honor to provide scholarships to graduating seniors of Gilmer High School. The tournament was renamed in his memory and the tournament became a fundraiser for the foundation. In 2010, another friend, Kylan Warren, was involved in an accident while working for Georgia Power, where the majority of his body was burned. He passed away in August 2010 and his name was added to make the West & Warren Foundation.”

Henderson also pointed out that another friend, Ike Thomas, is honored through the tournament as well.

“Ike Thomas, another friend, was killed in a car accident last April on Easter Sunday while traveling back to Kennesaw State University from Ellijay. His name was not added to the Foundation name, but his father served on the Board of Trustees for the Foundation, and he is honored through the flag football tournament as well.”
