Gilmer Knocks Off North Paulding in Day One of Phoenix Classic

The Gilmer Lady Cats and Bobcats got the job done on the first day of the Phoenix Classic at Sonoraville High School on Friday against North Paulding, as the Lady Cats annihilated the Lady Wolfpack by thirty-three points and the Bobcats used a big third quarter to outlast the Wolfpack.The Lady Cats started off their game on the right note, as Bailey Charles and Brittany Lowman traded a pair of threes in a first quarter that saw Gilmer outscore North Paulding 18-8.

Looking to increase their lead in the second quarter, the Lady Cats refused to pack down to the Lady Wolfpack, putting up fourteen more points and allowing just two to North Paulding, giving Gilmer a 32-10 lead at the half.

Now with a chance to seal the deal in the third quarter, the Lady Cats continued to outplay the Lady Wolfpack, and once the period ended Gilmer held a secure 43-19 lead. The Lady Cats played their second string in the final quarter and saw their bench play quite well, as they outscored North Paulding 14-5 to hand Gilmer a 57-24 blowout victory.

Bailey Charles had an excellent game against the Lady Wolfpack, scoring a team-high seventeen points with three assists. Next in scoring for Gilmer was Jenna Parks, who had eleven points. Parks also had three rebounds and an assist in the contest.

Britton Farlow fought hard to help the Lady Cats both on offense and on defense on Friday, recording six assists and four steals against the Lady Wolfpack, both team-highs.

With the Lady Cats’ game now in the books, a short-handed Bobcats’ squad hit the court looking to put Gilmer at 2-0 on the evening’s games. Fortunately for North Paulding, the Wolfpack put up a much better fight in this one, and after the first quarter the Bobcats were the owners of a 22-18 advantage.

The second quarter saw these two teams go back-and-forth throughout its eight minutes, and a late two-point shot by Connor Webber evened the score at 36-36 at halftime.

The third quarter would prove to be pivotal in the outcome of this matchup, and a 23-10 run by the Bobcats in the period gave the team a 59-46 lead going into the fourth.

North Paulding did all it could to close the gap on Gilmer in the fourth quarter, scoring seventeen points in the final eight minutes, but it was not enough to top the Bobcats on this night, as they would win the game by the final score of 74-63.

Joe Bob Charles gave his all for the Bobcats in the victory, leading the team with thirty points, eleven rebounds, and two steals, respectively. Charles also had four assists in the game.

Wheeler Lancey had a fine outing in the win, scoring fifteen points in the game. Connor Webber also played well in the contest, finishing the game with fourteen points, three rebounds, and three assists.

The Bobcats and Lady Cats will be playing again in day two of the Phoenix Classic on Saturday against Armuchee Indians and Lady Indians. The Lady Cats and Lady Indians will square off at 3:00 p.m. with the Bobcats and Indians facing each other following the girls’ game’s conclusion.
