The Gilmer High School Lady Bobcats softball team took on the Southeast Whitfield Lady Raiders in a tightly contested contest that needed an extra inning to decide the outcome. The Lady “Cats” clawed out a one run, 2-1, victory after Baylee Wimpey’s score from third in the bottom of the eighth inning. The low scoring affair did not see a run scored until the top of the third inning. A two out SEW RBI triple gave the Lady Raiders a 1-0 lead. The score remained the same until the bottom of the next inning.
Kristen Marshall’s sacrifice ground out, tied the game at 1-1 going into the fifth inning. Neither team’s defense allowed another run throughout the last three innings of regulation.
The top of the eighth inning saw the Lady “Cats” stifling defense face only three batters before giving way to the “Cats’” bats. McKenzie Chambers led off with a double that put runners on second and third, Wimpey, started out on second, per international softball extra innings rules.
Autumn Banks sacrifice fly attempt was corralled, however, in attempting to pick off Wimpey on third, the Lady Raiders committed an error (overthrow) that gave Wimpey easy access to the Gilmer’s game winning run.
