Police Defuse Bomb Scare Incident

News

A suspicious package was found early this morning, July 19, in the area of the BP next to BB&T Bank on Maddox Drive in East Ellijay.

Witnesses say the clerk on duty found a cooler in the parking lot as he began his shift and notified authorities of the suspicious container. As authorities arrived and inspected the cooler they found evidence to suspect a possible device.

With GEMA and GBI (Georgia Bureau of Investigation) Agents aiding, the Police supported an effort to identify additional aspects of the container and possible contents.

Just after 11:00 am, a GBI agent was able to discover the contents to be food products and nothing else. No device was discovered.

Now, this may appear to be a simple false alarm, but the City Police do not handle any possible dangers lightly. Through following procedures and training, the officers of these agencies were able to ensure a no injury incident with the expected courage and efficiency of their station as they investigated a package of unknown origins and unknown purpose.

FYN caught up with East Ellijay Police Chief Larry Callahan. When questioned about further investigation Mr. Callahan indicated there would be no need, stating, “We see no criminal intent.”
