ELLIJAY, Ga. – Citizens applauded after a man was drug from a local catholic church, beaten, stripped, and hung from a cross on the downtown square today.

Taken from the steps of the Good Samaritan Catholic Church, the re-enactment saw “Jesus” beaten and flogged before being forced to carry a massive cross from the church steps towards the downtown square.

Along the way, several ‘stations’ were set up. Each one held special meaning within the Crucifixion story and was re-enacted. Each station was done twice, once in English, and again in Spanish.

Ultimately, the procession ended on the square in front of the Gilmer Courthouse where the crosses were mounted with Jesus and the two thieves. Onlookers marched in silence as they listened and bore witness to the display.

Some drivers parked and walkers on the square stopped to join the crowd during the procession. Afterwards, the three crosses stayed up as each man was removed and the re-enactment concluded.

The re-enactment has become an annual event over recent years, held on Good Friday, beginning around 3 p.m. Additionally, the church also has plans for Easter Vigil on Saturday, and Easter Mass on Sunday.
