Gilmer Sheriff’s Deputy arrested for assault

JASPER, Ga. – Pickens County has released the charges against a Gilmer County Sheriff’s Deputy after he was arrested last night, January 31, 2021.

According to the Pickens County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a call regarding domestic violence at approximately 1016 p.m. on January 31, 2021. Authorities are not releasing additional details about the incident itself at this time.

However, the report did say that they arrested an off-duty Gilmer Sheriff’s Office deputy. Named in the report as Jason Lynn Newman, 34. The Pickens Sheriff’s Office stated that Gordon County Sheriff’s Office located Newman around 1 a.m. before Pickens County took him into custody where he is currently being held at the Pickens Sheriff’s Office Adult Detention Center.

According to reports, Newman is facing a charges involving a misdemeanor “Interfering with a 911 call” as well as charges of obstructing police, Aggravated Assault, Aggravated Battery, and Reckless Conduct.

In response to the arrest, Gilmer County’s Sheriff’s Office commented, “At this time, GCSO can not make a comment on an ongoing investigation that is being conducted by another agency. Deputy Newman has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the Internal Affairs investigation.”
