The Lady Mountaineers eventually found some rhythm closing the gap with a 10-5 run to close the first quarter, down by three 15-12. However, a tying shot attempt was blocked with authority by Jenna Parks with five seconds left to go in the quarter.

The defenses ruled the early part of the second quarter as nearly three minutes passed before a basket was made. The stalemate was broken with a game tying three by North Murray’s Grace Phillips. Only seven more points were scored throughout the rest of the half, with the home team scoring four of them. Gilmer led 22-18 at the half.

Gilmer began to pull away early, as Parks hit a three off an assist from Bailey Charles a mere 49 seconds into the half. The three sparked a 10-2 run, reminiscent of the first quarter, over the first three minutes of the third quarter.

Down 33-25 with just over four minutes left in the third, the Lady Mountaineers took advantage of a Lady Bobcat offensive lull and used a 7-3 run to go into the fourth down three, 35-32.

The Lady “Cats” cleared away the cobwebs of malaise in the fourth quarter as Ansley Mulkey’s put back basket opened the quarter, and increased the Gilmer lead to five. The basket sparked yet another Gilmer run as the Lady “Cats” outscored the visitors 13-4 over the first four and half minutes of the fourth, and 16-6 over the course of the entire quarter.

The boys’ game did not turn out nearly as well for the home team as the Mountaineers repeatedly outworked the Bobcats on the glass, finishing with a twenty rebound advantage (46-26).

The Mountaineers scored 12 points before the home team got on the scoreboard. By the end of the first quarter the Mountaineers had an insurmountable 19 point lead, 24-5. Zach Vess, who led all scorers with 30 points and all rebounders with 14 boards, hit a buzzer beater at the end of the quarter that only added salt in the wound.

The Bobcats showed some life in the second quarter scoring 19 points; however, continuous lapses on the defensive end and lack of rebounding failed to keep the Mountaineers from releasing the lead. North Murray led 45-21 at the half.

The second half was not much better for the Bobcats as Gilmer fell behind by 24 points going in to the fourth, 61-37, and finally fell 87-59.
