The Gilmer High School Bobcats football team traveled to Murphy North Carolina to take on the Bulldogs in a preseason scrimmage. The “Cats” scratched the Bulldogs early and often, dominating on both sides of the ball. The scrimmage featured each team getting the ball for 10 plays before switching possessions.The “Cats” came out hot, scoring field goals on the first two Gilmer possessions of the night, while holding Murphy’s offense to one two down in the first six possessions.

Overall the Bobcats scored five times, two field goals, and three touchdowns, while the Bulldogs scored one touchdown late in the scrimmage. Gilmer also missed a field goal, for another potential score.

Afterward, head coach, Wesley Tankersley, spoke to FYN about the scrimmage.

“

You want to be excited about scrimmages obviously and doing well in them but you also know too that it is just a scrimmage and two weeks is the real deal. And probably the biggest scare for me is having a good scrimmage and then us not working as hard as we can the next two weeks to get prepared for Fannin.

”

Tankersley also talked about the ability to younger and less experienced players an opportunity during the scrimmage.

“About every five plays we switched our ones and twos in, so we got a lot of looks at a lot of different kids; which is really good for us especially going into two Fridays from now, being able to try to look at depth and who we think may be able to get some time out there so we don’t have as many people playing both ways.”

Tankesley also expounded more on the trying build depth within in the team.

“Depth is a huge issue, especially in the first game. With having to play four quarters and having not done that in while, maybe the heat, you just never know what’s going to happen; but I think we got a lot of looks at a lot of different kids and saw some good things out of them.”

The Bobcats will face the rival Rebels of Fannin County High School at Fannin on August 30th.
