J-Hill’s Two Minute Drill

Opinion, Team FYN Sports

Welcome back to the Drill. Today is Easter Sunday, so while the kids are outside running after eggs, the guys will be inside talking about the latest news in sports. Here are five stories that you just might hear about today:Petrino in a Pickle – I’ve always heard that karma is real, and that when you continue to do something wrong over and over eventually you will pay. It sure seems like karma may be at work in the case of Arkansas head coach Bobby Petrino, who is on administrative leave after failing to tell the school that the motorcycle wreck he had earlier in the week involved 25-year-old Jessica Dorrell, a former volleyball player at Arkansas that Petrino hired as a student-athlete development coordinator and had an affair with. Petrino has been seen as a slimeball for as long as I can remember due to his many unprofessional moves as a coach, from secretly meeting with Auburn officials while he was at Louisville in hopes that he would replace former boss Tommy Tuberville to leaving the Atlanta Falcons in the middle of his first season without informing his coaching staff of his decision, a staff that included his brother Paul. Petrino left the Falcons to take the Arkansas job, a job that he may now lose all because he couldn’t keep himself and his mistress upright on a motorcycle. Sure sounds like karma to me.

Van Gundy Hangs Howard Out to Dry – Don’t look now, but things are going crazy down in Orlando. As if the Magic’s losing ways weren’t bad enough (the team’s 88-82 win last night ending a five-game losing streak), a rift between head coach Stan Van Gundy and star player Dwight Howard may have gotten even wider on Friday when the head coach said that people in the organization had told him that the rumors of Howard trying to get him fired were in fact true. While Van Gundy made his statements matter of factly and without much hesitation, Howard, who soon after came up and gave Van Gundy a hug and took over with the media, just played the “I know nothing” card although those in attendance had all heard what appears to be the truth. It’s an ugly situation with the team, but it appears that only one solution is feasible: Stan Van Gundy must go. I really like Van Gundy, and I think he can still coach in the NBA (the Knicks need a head coach, and they’ve hired a Van Gundy before), but in this situation you have to side with your star if you want to win it all any time soon.

Williams’ Wired, Recording Released – An independent filmmaker who was working on a movie about the life of former Saints special team player Steve Gleason, who is suffering from ALS, has released a recording of former Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams’ speech to his team prior to the team’s playoff game against the San Fransisco 49ers. In the speech, which last about two minutes, Williams makes several outlandish statements, including stating “kill the head and the body will die”, telling his defense to see if 49ers wide receiver Michael Crabtree is a “prima donna” and to aim for his ACL, and then emphasizing hitting 49ers running back Frank Gore in the head so that he starts “running sideways”. Maybe my view is not in the majority, but I think this recorded talk may mean the last of Gregg Williams coaching in the NFL. However, one thing on the current Rams defensive coordinator’s side is that nothing new really came out of this; after all, how did you imagine a talk about bounties would go?

Mayhem at the Masters – The final day of the Masters starts later today, and what a day it promises to be. While this Sunday in Augusta, Georgia will be a day that the game of golf will never forget, I want to shift the focus to yesterday, when “favorite” Tiger Woods imploded completely, which included kicking his golf club like a ten-year-old would. I use the word favorite in quotations for a reason, and it’s because going into the tournament I had zero confidence that he would win, unlike many at ESPN. Woods looked like a serious contender for the green jacket after the first day of play in which he shot one over par, but a failure to break par at all in any round of the Masters—something that he’s only managed to do once before—has ended his hopes of winning. With Woods now out of the picture, I say to watch out for veteran Phil Mickelson, who is currently just one shot of off leader Peter Hanson’s pace.

UK KOs KU – On Monday, which seems like weeks ago now given all the other events that have been going on, the Kentucky Wildcats finished off an excellent season with a 67-59 victory over the Kansas Jayhawks. Although the eight-point differential between the two games makes it seem like it was a very close game, for the most part the Wildcats dominated, out-rebounding and outscoring Bill Self’s squad throughout. The victory gives Kentucky its first national title since 1998 and John Calipari his first title in his twenty years of coaching and validates one fact: the Wildcats are officially back, and they will be contending for national championships as long as Calipari has anything to do with it.

Sad Sports Stat of the Week

The Atlanta Braves are now the only team in the majors without a hit with runners in scoring position (0-for-10 through two games).
