Tuesday December 3rd, marked the first time the Gilmer basketball teams saw any game action since the Tip-Off Tournament during Thanksgiving week. Gilmer welcomed Gordon Central to town, and after the junior varsity squads won with ease, the Lady Bobcats clawed the Lady Warriors 53-28, while the Bobcats’ boys waxed the Warriors 87-63.The Lady “Cats” won the tip and looked to get the scoring started quickly. The Lady Warriors went up 4-0 before Sarah Lambert grabbed her third offensive rebound of the game and was fouled on the put back attempt.

She made one of her free throws to get Gilmer on the board. Jenna Parks worked in the paint and scored another basket. The Lady Warriors had gone up 6-3 when Bailey Charles hit a game-tying three pointer and the Lady “Cats” never looked back, ending the quarter on a 10-0 run.

The second quarter was a defensive battle as neither team was able to get much going offensively. Charles found Parks for two points early in the quarter. Hannah Jones drove to the basket, something she does very efficiently, and scored two more for Gilmer.

The last minutes of the quarter showcased hard work by Megan Allen off of the bench. Good defensive positioning led to rebounds and a couple of steals. Her made free throw was the last point of the quarter for the Lady “Cats,” and Gilmer led 18-10 at the half.

The start of the third quarter brought new life to the Lady “Cat” offense, and the defense stayed in lockdown mode. Allen connected on a long basket to open the scoring, and Charles, Farlow, Lambert along with a host of others followed suit.

Emily Reece checked in and converted two free throws. Two Meghan Flowers steals led to a free throw from Hannah Colwell. With only the fourth quarter left to play, the Lady “Cats” led 33-14.

The bench players started making their way in late into the contest. Flowers was able to find Emily Sanford for two points after she broke the Gordon Central press.

Kaylee “TJ” Deyton joined in on the fun with a basket of her own after Sanford drove the baseline and made a perfect pass. When the final horn sounded, the Lady “Cats” had won the game 53-28.

It was a great team effort in the win, as all Lady “Cat” players scored and contributed. Leading the charge was Bailey Charles with 11 points. “TJ” Deyton had six points, and Lambert finished with five. The Lady “Cats” will host the Fannin Lady Rebels on December 6 at 7:00.

The Bobcats took the court in the second varsity game of the night. It was a high scoring game for the Bobcats, nearing 90 points. Just as they did in the girls’ game, the officials were breaking in their whistles with foul after foul but it wasn’t enough to slow the Bobcat offense.

Joe Bob Charles started the scoring for the Bobcats, scoring on an easy basket after he swiped the ball from Gordon Central player; however the “Cats” quickly fell behind 5-2, but Bailey Allen closed the gap by making two free throws after he was intentionally fouled.

The “Cats” kept possession of the ball, and Charles hit a step-back three to give the Gilmer a 7-5 lead. Wheeler Lancey and Taner Reece joined in on the scoring, and Hayden Hoequest hit a buzzer beating shot to give the “Cats” a 20-18 lead after one.

The Warriors was able to keep it close early on as the Gordon Central players hustled down the court and got easy baskets. Charles scored half of the team’s second quarter points, drawing fouls and hitting his free throws.

Reece found a spot on the floor in which he was automatic, knocking down his second and third shots from that very spot. Reece is building himself a highlight reel with the blocks he has had thus far, and he added another one in the closing moments of the quarter. The “Cats” were able to pull away a little, leading 38-29 at the half.

The third quarter was an offensive explosion for the Bobcats. Corey Waters, Lancey, and Charles scored 35 of the team’s 37 third quarter points. In one quarter, the Bobcats had doubled its first half production.

The Bobcat offense was extremely efficient in the process. Lancey made defenders look silly on a crossover. He and Waters poured in four three-pointers, and Charles kept getting to the basket and drawing fouls. After three quarters, the Bobcats held a 75-55 lead.

The fourth quarter showed quite a bit of regression, but that is expected following a quarter like the third. The Bobcats were able to add on 12 more points thanks to Lancey, Charles, Allen, and Cole Edmondson. The final score showed a Bobcat win, 87-63.

Charles led the Bobcats in scoring with 31 points. Lancey had 21, Waters had 14, and Reece had 8. Charles showed his versatility in this game. He was being shadowed for most of the game by a guard smaller than him, so he took his game to the post and put in a lot of minutes down there.

Lancey continued to hit the three’s and the floaters, and displayed his precise passing once again. Other than the slow transition defense at the beginning of the game, it was an all-around great effort by the Bobcats.

The Bobcats will host Fannin County on Friday December 6 following the girl’s game. Start time is approximately 8:30.
