Dawson Too Much for Gilmer

GHS Football, Team FYN Sports

Dawsonville, GA — “Sometimes you’re the windshield and sometimes you’re the bug, and we were the bug tonight,” surmised Gilmer Head Coach Kevin Saunders following their 35-0 loss to the Dawson County Tigers on Friday night.

That was an appropriate way to put it. The Bobcats didn’t have any answers on either side of the ball throughout the night.

Coming off a big Homecoming win over Lumpkin the previous week, Gilmer travelled to Dawson County looking to improve their region record to 2-1. The Tigers of Dawson had a different idea. Coming off a bye week, the Tigers were able to start fast and did not let up until the game was well in hand.

The story of this one was the Dawson defense and the inability of the Gilmer offense to get anything going. Other than a couple penalties, the Cats offense was unable to manage a first down until late in the second quarter. This led to successive three and out possessions. The lone highlight for Gilmer was the stellar punting of Junior Seth Darling.

Seth Darling punts.

Anyone who has read my coverage of the Gilmer team over the last two years knows full well the type of game Gilmer plays on the offensive side of the ball. They’re reliant on long, clock eating drives to keep their defense fresh and unpredictable. It’s also a way to mask a lack of depth for a rebuilding program, which Gilmer still is. As Saunders put it “they’re stronger than we are right now as a program, it was a learning experience.”

Spenser Smith saves a touchdown.

Dawson’s spread attack looked to establish their ability to get outside to the numbers with quick screens and sweeps. It wasn’t a surprise to Saunders, “they did and they were faster than us and they can throw the ball pretty good, we knew that going in and we tried to deal with it, we did what we could.”

Dawson RB Isaiah Grindle lands just short of the goal line.

The ability to get the ball outside effectively allowed Dawson to run the ball inside at will. It also opened up the deep ball, which they took advantage of toward the end of the first half. Quarterback Zach Holtzclaw opened the second half with a long touchdown pass to extend their lead to 35-0. From there it was apparent the game was in hand.

Coach Saunders put it best in his aforementioned comments about program depth. The “eye test” alone suggested the Bobcats would be in trouble. However, we’ve seen them play up to their competition on several occasions the last two years. Every time they’ve done so though, it’s because they’ve been able to sustain drives.

This performance was out of character. The reason might actually be pretty simple. Dawson had two weeks to prepare for the Wing-T offense, which isn’t run by many teams in 2020. Any coach will tell you, especially at the high school level, games are usually won during preparation. When a team runs an offense that teams aren’t used to seeing, it creates trouble when they only have a few days prepare. Thus, my belief in this Gilmer team isn’t shaken. They still have the ability to play their game and get into the playoffs, where nobody has the benefit of a bye week.

Saunders perhaps said it best, “we just have to get back we have plenty of football games left and we just have to keep playing.”

The Bobcats will get back to playing this Friday night when they host North Hall in a big region game.

Gilmer Basketball Takes Big Region Wins

The Lady Raiders of Southeast Whitfield came into Gilmer High School on Monday looking for an upset and there wasn’t any way the Lady Cats would let that happen.  Action started slow with the Lady Cats having to get passed a low shooting percentage and foul trouble early in the first period thus allowing the Lady Raiders to carry a 2 point advantage in to the second period. The Lady Cats fought through adversity in the 2nd to put 18 points on the board while holding the Lady Raiders to 15 points.  Really good defense played a role in the score being 26-25 at the half with the Lady Cats on top.

Starting in the 3rd period it was all Lady Cats.  These girls came out with new life and energy.  Mary Lee Callihan put up 8 of her 12 total points to start putting the Lady Rebels on the bus with a loss. The Lady Cat defense played outstanding only allowing their opponent to put 2 points on the board.  At the end of 3, Lady Cats 46-Lady raiders 27.  The 4th Period was almost a carbon copy of the previous period with the Lady Cats owning the floor and outscoring the Lady Raiders 26-16.  Leading the scoring for the Lady Cats were Katie Kiker-14 points, Mary Lee Callihan-14 points, Bailey Teague and Emma Callihan both had 7 points on the night.

On the boys’ side it was a much different game.  Both teams came out fast but neither team could find the net.  At the end of the 1st period the score was tied at 9.  As the 2nd period began the shots started to fall for both teams and in a manner that is Bobcat basketball, they would’t give up.  The Bobcats ended the 1st half with a 22-21 lead headed to the break.

The 3rd period kept the pace of the first half with not a lot of scoring by either team,  There were multiple lead changes through out the the period with both teams putting 13 points on the board.  Gilmer 35-34 over the Raiders of Southeast headed to the 4th.  Both teams came out of the gate headstrong and looking for the region win in the 4th.  The Southeast Raiders hit several key baskets to take the lead midway through the period and was able to maintain the lead until late in the game.  The Bobcats battled back to within 3 points at 19.2 seconds on the clock.  David Smith #5 swished the net with the biggest 3 pointer of the night at 6.9 seconds in the game to tie game 45-45 and send it to overtime.

In the free basketball period(overtime), The Bobcats did a great job of shutting down the Raiders.  Scoring 9 points in the overtime period, the Bobcats sealed the win and took a big region win 54-49.

Leading the scoring for the Bobcats were Tyler Simms-18 points, Kell Weaver-15 points and Tripp Pierce-9 points.

Mountaintop Tourney: Bobcats Claw the Colts

Gilmer High School, Team FYN Sports

This past Thursday at the Mountaintop Holiday Classic, the Gilmer Bobcats took on the Coahulla Creek Colts at Fannin County High School. Both teams were battling to redeem themselves from their lost games prior to the matchup at Fannin County. The Colts did not come to “horse around”, they put their all into the game and the Bobcats did the same.

During the first quarter of the game, Gilmer relied heavily on inside passes for shots under the basket which was how they scored the majority of their points. This allowed Bobcat, Kell Weaver, to be the main man inside throughout the game and lead Gilmer in scoring with twenty-five points. The Colts did most of their scoring from the outside thanks to their point guard, Maddox Adams. Adams led his team in scoring with twenty-eight points overall. Although the teams had different methods of scoring, it didn’t mean that one was better than the other. As the buzzer sounds for the first quarter to end, the Gilmer Bobcats and Coahulla Creek Colts were tied with a score of 14-14.

Both teams were fighting for the lead as soon as the second quarter began. The Bobcats gained more confidence in their shooting and started making outside shots. Bobcat, Tyler Sims, contributed twenty points for Gilmer with his outside shots. Another Bobcat, David Smith, followed the trend by scoring a three point shot for his team. Bobcat number two, Carter Hice, started driving the lane and put eight more points on the board. Gilmer took the lead over the Colts after the second quarter with a score of 30-24.

With the Colts making fakes left and right, Gilmer also found an opportunity for more points. The Bobcats had the determination to look up the court and see the open lane as a perfect chance for layups. Bobcat, Coady Cobb, had the speed to make the layups and contribute six points for Gilmer. Another Bobcat, Austin Daman, contributed four more points to put on the board for his team. Gilmer doubled their lead over the Colts at the end of the third quarter with a score of 46-34.

Although the Colts lead strayed farther from the Bobcats, they were not giving up. Both teams started getting after it on defense and drawing fouls. Towards the end of the game, Gilmer started driving the defense inside, leaving teammates on the outside open where they would score more points. The Colts proved to have outstanding determination and hustle by going after loose balls and getting steals on defense. However, it was not enough for them to trot away with a win. Being the last game of the night, the Gilmer Bobcats closed out the first day of the tournament with a 66-54 win over the Coahulla Creek Colts.

The Bobcats win puts their overall record at 4-8 while the Colts stand at 3-7. Catch the Gilmer Bobcats next region game on January 5 at 8:30 as they travel to take on Northwest Whitfield!

The Lady Bobcats Nip the Lady Colts

Gilmer High School, Team FYN Sports

The Lady Bobcats traveled to Fannin County High School this past Thursday where they were matched up to take on the Lady Colts for day one of the Mountaintop Holiday Classic. The Colts were striving to continue their winning streak of two games prior to the matchup at Fannin County while the Bobcats were determined to knock them off their high horse and redeem themselves from a seven point loss to Union just a few nights before.

The Lady Colts did not waste any time. The first chance they got on defense, they went into a full court press. Despite the Lady Colts high pressure defense, the Lady Bobcats broke the press with no trouble. Gilmer had amazing looks up the court and found many opportunities for wide open shots. Bobcat, Emma Callihan, broke through the full court press and led her team in scoring by putting twenty-three points on the board. Lady Colt, Lily Snyder, led Coahulla Creek in scoring with twenty points overall. Number ten for the Bobcats, Marylee Callihan, was right behind her teammate in scoring with nineteen points thanks to her ankle-breaking moves under the basket. The Lady Bobcats had a three point lead over the Lady Colts at the end of the first quarter with a score of 16-13.

With the Lady Colts behind, they decided to try what was working for the Lady Bobcats. Coahulla Creek started looking up the court for open passes where they added onto their score. Bobcat, Faith Ralston, starting driving the lane and contributed two points for Gilmer. The Bobcats defense came alive towards the end of the quarter which resulted in Mallory Kiser getting steals and putting seventeen points on the board. Lady Colt, Mallory Poe, makes a three point buzzer beater shot at the end of the second quarter. Poe’s shot made the score 35-29 with Gilmer still in the lead.

Since the Lady Bobcats tried to keep their lead just as hard as the Lady Colts tried to take it away from them, both teams started fouling. Bobcat, MichaMichaela Staley, drew fouls and made one of her shots which contributed one point for Gilmer. Another Lady Bobcat, Hope Colweu, contributed two points for her team from foul shots due to her grit down low. As the third quarter came to an end, the Lady Bobcats kept their lead over the Lady Colts with a score of 54-42.

As the fourth quarter began, the Lady Colts found what was missing in their defense. Coahulla Creek’s intensity came alive by making steals left and right. With the Colts making adjustments, the Bobcats had to do the same if they wanted to keep their lead. Gilmer started to have good looks and passes on the inside where they extended their lead. The ball would be on the Lady Colts side of the court one second, then on the Lady Bobcats the other. Despite the Colts burst of energy at the end, they could not gallop to victory. The Gilmer Lady Bobcats won the game with a score of 77-67 over the Coahulla Creek Lady Colts.

The Lady Bobcats win puts their overall record at 7-5 with the Lady Colts standing at 5-6. Catch the Gilmer Lady Bobcats next region game on January 5 at 7:00 as they travel to take on Northwest Whitfield!

Gilmer

The Gilmer Wrestling mandatory hydration test has been rescheduled for this Tuesday, 10/24 at 5pm.  GCHS wrestling coaches will be taking a bus and it will leave the high school at approximately 3pm Tuesday afternoon.  Wrestlers who are still in football will have to go to the Hydration Test this coming Saturday 10/28 and will meet at the high school at 8:45am.  GCHS Coaches are asking that the wrestlers please drink plenty of water and eat healthy in preparation for the test.  Athletes will need to wear a t-shirt and shorts, and the cost for the test is $10.

Wrestling Hydration Tests Postponed due to Gold Rush

The upcoming Hydration Test has been cancelled by the UNG Testing Administrator.  He told coaches that he forgot “Gold Rush” would be this Saturday.   Though the coaches offered several solutions, the testing administrator chose to postpone the mandatory hydration test until a later date.

“I am working on rescheduling, and it will be either this coming Tuesday or Saturday,” Coach Joshua Ghobadpoor told his wrestlers Thursday evening.  “I will let everyone know the time and date once it is rescheduled.”  Coach Ghobadpoor added, “I apologize for the inconvenience this has caused for many many people.”

#TeamFYNSports – SPORTSWRITER’S PLAYER OF THE WEEK: A. Bertolini

Player Of The Week

My Gilmer Bobcats player of the week is #8 A. Bertolini , this guy is all over the field making plays and best of all taking care of his team. This young man shows sportsmanship, dignity, and pride towards his teammates as well as other players. This guy has what it takes along with many others of this Bobcats team to possibly upset some really big teams in 2018. With the right coaching and strategy anything is possible. Way to Go #8!!! GO CATS!!!

Gilmer Bobcats host The Southeast Whitfield Raiders – 10/13/17

Uncategorized

The Bobcats showed a lot of improvement on both sides of the ball Friday night. They held the Raiders to just 39 points for the whole game. Whereas previously in the season it has been 49-0 at halftime against most of the  season.

The Bobcats defense stopped 2 two point conversions and were able to force the Raiders to make a couple punts.

The Bobcats offensive line showed lots of improvement by moving the ball down the field and picking up a few first downs instead of going three and out every drive.

Even though the scoreboard didn’t show Bobcats as the winners, it was a win in the coaches and teammates minds this week! The Bobcats are coming together week after a week and improving constantly. With such a young team that Gilmer has this season, you coach them up and build them up for the following seasons.

The Raiders defeated the Bobcats 39-0 giving the Bobcats a 0-7 record for the 2017 season. If this team continues to show progress like they did Friday night I can firmly say they will upset several schools in the 2018 season.

The Bobcats travel to Northwest Whitfield this Friday. Kick of is at 7:30, come out and support YOUR GILMER BOBCATS!!!!!!

Team FYNSports Sports Writer Player of the Week – David Smith

Bobcat's Corner, Player Of The Week

Gilmer Bobcats D. Smith #7 was able to hold his offense together facing a tough Union County Panthers Defense Friday Night. Smith completed several passes, 2 for touchdowns and was also able to run the ball. He is the perfect definition of a double threat QB. This kid shows heart and outstanding character and that is hard to do when you see your team loosing by 50+ points. When you are able to keep your composure and still make positive plays by completing passes, picking up yards by running the ball and  not afraid to take a hit, that in my book is what you call a team leader. This young man is very impressive and I enjoy getting to watch him perform on Friday nights.
