Mr. Joel Lee Sweat, JR. age 82, of Ellijay, died Tuesday, December 31st 2019.

Mr. Sweat was born March 20th 1937, in Atlanta GA to the late Joel Lee Sweat, Sr. and Kathleen Grant Sweat. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Atlanta and was a truck driver for the Stratford Motor Inn.

Survivors include: Wife; Louise Sweat Ellijay GA, Sons; Joel Lee Sweat III, Pasadena CA, Kerry Sweat, Ellijay GA, Brother; Larry Eugene Sweat, Ellijay, Sisters; Shirley Ann Craig, Apopka FL, Katherine Juanita Garner, Gainesville GA, Grandchildren; Jaylen Frady and Jared Sweat.

Derek Allen Stone, Jr

Mr. Derek Allen Stone, Jr., age 35 of the Tails Creek Community Ellijay, GA. Passed on Friday May 3rd, 2019 at his residence. Born January 3rd, 1984 to his parents Derek Allen Stone, Sr. and Deborah Rena (Byers) Glenn in Sandy Springs, GA. Following High School at Milton High and Gilmer High he continued his education at Chattahoochee Tech and worked as a kitchen manager at several local restaurants. He was known for making the best steaks in town. Derek was an extremely talented artist and bass player. He was fluent in German and enjoyed flying drones, playing video games and chess.

Avary M. Dimmock, Jr.

June 5, 1924 – March 11, 2019

Mr. Avary Miller Dimmock, Jr. age 94, of Ellijay, died Monday, March 11, 2019.

Mr. Dimmock was born, June 5, 1924 in Atlanta, the son of the late Avary M. and Helen Meckel Dimmock. He graduated Emory University, in 1942 and The University of Georgia, in 1949. He began his law practice in Ellijay as a partner with the firm of McCutchen & Dimmock and in 1983 he continued to practice law with the Dimmock & Hill firm until his retirement in 1995. After retirement he was of counsel with Clark & Clark.

He was a member of the Georgia Bar Association. He also served as, first president of Appalachian Judicial Circuit Bar Association,and served as former city attorney for City of Ellijay, county attorney for Gilmer County and also as president of the County Attorneys of Georgia and beginning in 1952 he served as local counsel and closing attorney for The Bank of Ellijay.

He was past president of Ellijay Rotary Club, past secretary and president of the Ellijay Lions Club, former chairman of board of First United Methodist Church, a Sunday school teacher, and veteran serving 3 years in the US Navy. He was voted Citizen of the Year, 1997 and also Person of the Century.

His wife; Jackie Dimmock preceded him in death, survivors include; children and spouse , Dan Dimmock, Ellijay, Ava and Joe Arp, Watkinsville, granddaughter and spouse; Anna and Jake Williams, great-grandchildren; Ward and Avary Cate Williams, several nieces and nephews, special friend; Bonnie Wells.

Funeral services will be held Saturday March 16, 2019 at 2:00 pm from the Ellijay First United Methodist Church with Dr. Thom Shores and Rev. Mark Westmoreland officiating . Interment will be in the Yukon cemetery.

The family will meet with friends Saturday from 1:00 pm until 2:00 pm at the church.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Ellijay First United Methodist Church, Building Fund 75 McCutchen St. Ellijay, Gilmer County Food Pantry in memory of Mr. Dimmock.

Mr. Troy Eddie Glass, Jr. age 52 of Ellijay died Monday February 18, 2019.

Mr. Glass was born July 25, 1966 in Cobb County the son of the late Troy E. Glass, SR. and Joyce York Glass. He worked in retail as manager for Sherwin-Williams Paint Co. and was a member of the Noonday Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents and son: Bristol Glass.

Survivors include: wife; Renee Anderson Glass children and spouse, Reannan Glass, Ellijay, Cartlan and Megan Glass, Canton, Dawson Glass, Marietta, brother and sister-in-law: Freddie and Heather Glass, Kennesaw, aunt and uncles, Sue and Bo Robinson Gainesville, Bobby York, Marietta several cousins also survive.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2:00 pm from the Noonday Baptist Church with Dr. Mark Somers officiating. Interment will be in the Dawson Cemetery.

The family will meet with friends Saturday February 23, 2019 at the Noonday Baptist Church 4121 Canton Rd. Marietta. From 12 noon until 2 pm.

Mr. Orville Kenneth Welch, Jr., age 68 of Ellijay, GA passed Sunday afternoon, June 10th, 2018 at his residence.

Mr. Welch was born January 2nd, 1950 in Ft. Wayne, Indiana to his late parents, Orville Kenneth Welch, Sr. and Betty Jane Lyke Welch.  He served honorably in the United States Army and worked as a tank installer for Petro Mechanical.  Kenneth is preceded in death by his daughter Sarah Welch and brother Michael Welch.

He is survived by his sister, Carolyn Welch of Michigan; brother, David Welch of Ellijay, GA; sister-in-law, Cathy Welch of Washington; special friends, Tammy and Dave Shepard of Michigan also survive.

A private family memorial service is being planned and will be held at a later date.

Mr. Robert Floy Billue, Jr.,69, passed away Wednesday, May 16, 2018 at his residence in Akien, SC.

Robert was born to the late Robert Floy and Sarah Council Billue, Sr. He graduated from the University of Auburn and spent his career working as a civil engineer for the US Army Corps of Engineers and then retired from the Department of Energy. Robert was a member of Aiken’s First Baptist Church and was an avid “War Eagle” fan.

He is survived by his wife, Sylvia O. Billue, Johnston, SC; two sons, Robert Floy (Laura Catherine) Billue III, Douglasville, GA,  Christopher Reagan Billue, Aiken; two grandchildren, Aubree S. Billue, Brice W. Billue; a sister, Jan Billue (Robert M.) Wynne of Sandersville, GA.

Ward William “Bill” Are, Jr: Obituary

Ward William “Bill” Are, Jr, of Blue Ridge, Georgia, formerly of  Ellijay and Marietta, Georgia, passed away on April 25, 2018.

Mr. Are, a child of the late Ward and Lorraine Are of Batesburg, South Carolina, was born on March 30, 1930, in Charleston, South Carolina. He graduated from Batesburg-Leesville High School, and was a member of The Citadel Class of 1951, where he served on both the Junior Sword Drill team and the Summerall Guards rifle demonstration team. He was a Korean War veteran and officer in the U.S. Army Reserves. He did post graduate work at Georgia Tech, and spent a career in engineering at Lockheed where he acquired two patents, and rose to the level of Department Manager of Quality Assurance.

Mr. Are was a lifelong Mason, was the 1965 Worshipful Master of the Nelms Lodge #323 in Smyrna, and was later active in the Lions Club in Ellijay where he was a Melvin Jones Fellow. He was a former church council member at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Marietta, a founding member of Hope Lutheran Church in Ellijay, and served on the Board of Directors of the Blackberry Mountain Association. His hobbies included fishing, boating, camping and coin collecting. He supported his children through their school athletic endeavors, both coaching and as a booster. He also served in an adult leadership capacity with the Boy Scouts of America and the YMCA Indian Guides.

He is survived by his children Ward W. “Skip” Are, III (Robin) of Powder Springs, Patrice Kathleen Are Grizzle of Adairsville and friend Kenneth Parker, and David C. Are(Melony) of Grover, South Carolina. He is also survived by his grandchildren Georgia Kathleen Johnson (Brian), Timothy Grizzle (Beth), Stephanie Flatt (Brandon), Carrie Christensen (Clayton), Danielle Are, and Clayton Are, and ten great-grandchildren, his brother Tom Are (Jean) of Tucker, Georgia.

He is preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Kathleen Lorick Shealy Are, his parents Ward and Lorraine Are of Batesburg, South Carolina, and son-in-law Tony Grizzle of Adairsville, Georgia.

The family will receive friends at Hope Lutheran Church, Ellijay, Georgia on May 5, 2018 from 11:00-12:00 o’clock. Memorial services for Mr. Are will be held at the church immediately following day at 12:00 o’clock, with entombment to follow in the church columbarium. Mr. Homer “Jack” Jackson, Jr. : Obituary

Mr. Homer “Jack” H. Jackson, Jr. age 69 of Lawrenceville, GA, formerly of Ellijay, GA passed on Thursday morning, September 21st, 2017 at the Peachtree Christian Hospice in Duluth, GA.

Mr. Jackson was born December 18th, 1947 in Ellijay, GA, graduated from Gilmer High School, Class of 1965, and served his country honorably in the U.S. Navy.  Jack was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church.  He was a cardiothoracic clinical engineer at Emory University Hospital for 38 years. He was a co-founder & President of the Atlanta Biomedical Engineering Group and started the biomedical departments at Emory University Hospital and Egleston Children’s Hospital. Jack was part of the heart team that was loaned from Emory University Hospital to Piedmont Hospital to start their heart program.

Mr. Jackson was preceded in death by his father & mother, Homer H. Jackson, Sr. & Ruby Tankersley Jackson, his daughter Angela Suzanne Jackson and sister Jane Madden. His survived by his wife of 48 years, Patricia Buffington Jackson of Lawrenceville, GA; daughter and son-in-law, Lea-Anne Jackson & Tom Dempsey of Decatur, GA; grandchildren, Ava Jackson Dempsey and Truett Jackson Dempsey; sister and brother-in-law, Suzanne & George Adkisson of Fayetteville, GA; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Rhonda and Johnny Withrow of Ellijay, GA; several nieces and nephews also survive.

Robert (Bob) Stewart Mosley, Jr. age 50, of Ellijay, passed away on Friday August 18, 2017 at Emory University Hospital after a courageous fight with cancer. Bob was born January 9, 1967 in Ellijay to Robert Mosley, Sr. and Winnie Hensley Mosley.

He was preceded in death by his father Robert and his brother, Mel Mosley. His is survived by his wife of 29 years, Denise Chastain Mosley, and their 4 children; Samantha, Sara, Mel and Rob Mosley; mother, Winnie Mosley; sisters and brothers-in-law, John and Cindy Mosley Abercrombie and Ed and Angie Mosley Stolz; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Hartscel and Gail Chastain; sister-in-law, Dawn Chastain; dear friend and brother-in-law, and sister-in-law, Jon and Debra Jones all of Ellijay, Ga.

Bob was a loving husband and father and a member of Whitestone Baptist Church. He was an avid outdoorsman and hunter, a love he shared and passed on to Samantha and his boys. He was a coach for the Georgia Impact Fastpitch Organization, where he coached Sara in her passion for softball. He followed in his father’s footsteps by becoming a private airplane pilot. He also had a love for flying helicopters. Bob was a graduate of Gilmer High School and Pickens Tech, where he became a diesel mechanic and certified welder. He was a land developer by trade and heavy equipment operator for years.

Mr. Charles A. Perkins, Jr., age 92, of Ellijay, died Friday December 9, 2016.

Mr. Perkins was born September 10.1924, in Pike County Ga the son of the late Charles and Bertha Harris Perkins. He was retired from General Motors, Lakewood Plant and was a veteran of WWII serving with the U.S. Army. His parents and brothers, Douglas, Harris, Olen Perkins, Hazel Whitted, and Marie Buffington preceded him in death.

Survivors include: wife, Geneva Mooney Perkins, sons; Tony, Jerry, and Larry Perkins all of Griffin, Frankie Taylor, Griffin, daughters; Shelia Ogletree and Lynn Ellis both of Griffin. Sister; Carrie Lou Johnson, Milner, 8 grandchildren; Chris and Crystal Taylor, Carmen and Alex Forrester, Chad and Carol Taylor, Jason and Maria McKoy, Casey and Sam Houston, Clint and Carmel McKoy, Drew Ellis and Marcus Ogletree, 15 great-grandchildren, special sister-in-law Ernestine Mooney  and caregiver Lynn Edwards.,  Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Mr. James Clyde Mull, Jr., age 43 of the Tails Creek community, Ellijay, GA passed on Tuesday morning, November 29th, 2016 at the Piedmont Mountainside Hospital in Jasper, GA.

Mr. Mull was born on March 13th, 1973 in Atlanta, GA to his late parents James Clyde Mull, Sr. and Joyce Geraldine Eason Mull. James worked as a mechanic for Just Brakes and loved working on cars, watching movies, and hanging out with his friends.

He is survived by his wife, Pamela Graves of the home in Ellijay, GA; Children, Leia Ann Joyce Mull, Luke Chevy Clyde Mull and Gabe Graves; Sisters, Carol Weaver of Ellijay, GA and Angela Cort of Stockbridge, GA; many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

Mr. Earl S. Sharples, Jr., age 62 of Talking Rock, died Monday October 3, 2016.
Mr. Sharples was born November 24, 1953, in New Jersey, the son of the late Earl S., Sr. and Clara Elizabeth Marshall Sharples. He was a high school graduate served in the US Army 82nd Airborne Division, was employed by Daniel and Lawson Pest Control and was a member of the Harvest Missionary Church.

Mr. Ernest Edward Donaldson, Jr. age 84 of Ellijay, GA passed on Tuesday morning, September 27th, 2016 at the Kindred Hospital of Rome.

Mr. Donaldson was born August 21st, 1932 in McCaysville, GA to his late parents Ernest Edwin Donaldson, Sr. and Jessie Roberta Dunagan Donaldson. Ernest was a member of the Nine Mile United Methodist Church. He graduated from McCaysville High School, Class of 1949, and served his country honorably in the United States Navy during the Korean War. He attended Georgia Tech and received his B.S. in Electrical Engineering in 1958, and his Master of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering in 1964. He retired from the Georgia Tech Research Institute as a Principal Research Engineer.

He is survived by his wife of over 36 years, Susan O’Neal Bowden Donaldson of the home in Ellijay, GA; Daughters and sons-in-law: Lori Lynn Donaldson of Greenville, SC, Susan Beth and Bo Pyskir of Naperville, IL and Margaret Ann and David Purcell of Grayson, GA; Sons and daughters-in-law, Mark and Sandra Bowden of Roswell, GA and Dr. John and Melissa Bowden of Bishop, GA; Grandchildren, Megan Patton, Lauren and Courtney Purcell, Larisa Pyskir, Rebecca, Maura, Rachel and Sarah Bowden, Nicholas, Andrew and Matthew Pyskir and Taylor Bowden; Nieces, Susan Bartlett, Laurel Bailey and Ashley Heldman; Nephew, Franklin Wiggins; Sister, Hilda Donaldson Bailey of McCaysville, GA also survives. Music will be by Kim Myers and George McClellan. Military graveside rites will immediately follow the service at the church and will be performed by the North GA Honor Guard. Graveside inurnment will take place at 2pm on Monday, October 3rd, 2016 at the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, GA.

Family will receive friends from 10am until the service hour on Monday, October 3rd, 2016 at the Nine Mile United Methodist Church.

Mr. Gibbs was born August 27,1944 in Canton GA,the son of the late Vernon Gibbs, Sr. and Catherine Green Gibbs, He worked in the printing industry, was a graduate of Gilmer High School, Class of 1962, served with the US Army and was a member of the Ellijay Church of Christ.

Funeral serves will be held Saturday May 28, 2016 at 2:00pm from the Ellijay Church of Christ with Minister Butch Jones officiating. Interment will be in the Ellijay Church of Christ cemetery.

The family will meet with friends Friday from 5 until 9pm at the funeral home.

Bernhardt Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
