2014 Gilmer High School Wrestling Banquet

The Gilmer High School Bobcats Wrestling team held its annual end of the year banquet to honor seniors and superlatives. The 2014 GHS class won seven of a possible eight state titles, with one runner up finish. The 2013-14 season saw the Bobcats win its 12th and 13th state titles, in both the Duals and Traditional Tournaments. Head coach, Sam Snider, spoke repeatedly of the uncanniness of the Bobcats’ dominance, as he reminded those in attendance that, “that just doesn’t happen.” (more…)

“Cats” Claim 13th

The Gilmer High School Bobcats wrestling team won its 13th state championship since 2005 with a dominate performance at the State Traditional Tournament held at West Laurens High School in Dexter Ga. The Bobcats finished with four individual champions, five finalists and eight place winners. The “Cats” claimed the title with 191, besting rivals Cass and Alexander who finished second and third by 31 and 47 points respectively. (more…)

“Cats” Claim Dirty Dozen

The Gilmer High School Bobcats wrestling team can claim 12 “Cats” going to the State Traditional Tournament, which decides the state champions for each weight class. The “Cats” took 13 wrestlers to the Sectionals Tournament, which decides participation and seeding in the State Tournament. The top eight place winners at Sectionals move on to the State Tournament. The “Cats” had 12 wrestlers make the top eight, and one ninth place finish, which is the first alternate if an injury happens. (more…)

“Cats” Crash Cass’ Company

The Gilmer High School Bobcats wrestling team traveled to Cass High School to take part in the Area 8-AAAA Traditional Tournament, the first step in making the State Traditional Tournament, which decided the state champion for each individual weight class. The Bobcats won the tournament with 276.5 points, and more importantly will take 12 wrestlers to the Sectionals Tournament, with a chance to move on to the State Traditional Tournament, where GHS will be looking for a its 13th wrestling state championship. Bobcats Beast at Burnt Mountain Classic: “Cats” Clobber with 284.5 Points in Pickens

The Gimer High School Bobcats wrestling team caught fire at the Burnt Mountain Classic, held at the home of the Dragons of Pickens High School. Gilmer took first place with 284.5 points, North Forsyth finished second with 187.5. The “Cats” clobbered the competition with 13, out of a possible 14 weight classes, wrestlers placing, and nine of them finishing first. Out of the 13 place winners, 12 won the last match of the day. Dropped Elbow Drops Cass: “Cats” Cash in for 12th State Title

The Gilmer High School Bobcats wrestling team secured its 12th state title, winning the AAAA State Duals Tournament with a breathtaking 31-30 win over the Cass Colonels. It was the second time in as many weeks that the “Cats” and Colonels clashed, the Bobcats beat Cass 36-18 in the Area Duals Finals. The incredibly close win came after the two teams tied, 30-30, after all final match tally. Gilmer was awarded the Dual and subsequently the State Title due to a Cass wrestler elbowing Matthew Waddell during the 170lbs match. (more…)

Bobcats Bring Back 3rd from the Bayou

The Gilmer High School Bobcats wrestling team traveled to Baton Rouge Louisiana to take part in the Deep South Bayou Duals. The Bobcats brought back a third place finishing, out of 40 top teams from across the country, with an 8-1 record in the tournament. Gilmer’s lone loss came at the hands of Jesuit (38-25). (more…)

“Senior Night” Success: Gilmer Goes 3-0

The Gilmer High School Bobcats wrestling team held its annual “Senior Night” celebration to honor 11 graduating seniors from the 2013-14 team. The ceremony took place during a home quad duals that saw the Bobcats sweep: The Fannin County High School Rebels (78-0); the White County Warriors (70-6) and the Sonoraville Phoenix (75-3). The wins come off the back of a rough weekend showing at the Cleveland Duals in Tennessee. The Bobcats lost to both Baylor (Tn.) (34-22) and Pope (Ga.) (28-35), but beat Roswell (Ga.) (42-20). “Cats” Crush Competition: Rule 1st Home Duals

The Gilmer High School Bobcats wrestling team, fresh off a second place finish in the prestigious Lake Norman Duals tournament, hosted the first home duals meet of the season, going 3-0 in the process. The Bobcats pummeled the Panthers of Union County 84-0, before blasting the Bruins of Northwest Whitfield 52-21, then thrashed the Trojans of North Hall 50-24. (more…)

Fundamentals Fail “Cats:” Marist Moves On

“Wrap up!” and “Block, please!” were the common phrases coming from the sidelines during Gilmer High School’s second round football playoff match-up against Marist. Missed tackles, missed blocks, and false starts plagued the “Cats” throughout the game and made the 38-0 Marist win, more lopsided than it actually was. (more…)

Gilmer vs. Marist: Tale of the Tape

The Gilmer High School Bobcats football team, after a 26-22 defeat of the Troup Tigers in the first round of the playoffs, will face the Marist War Eagles in the second round, at Marist. The matchup is a rematch of last year’s first round game, in which the Bobcats got lambasted 56-0. FYN was able to speak with both team’s head coaches about the upcoming rematch, and they agree that this year’s game should be much different than last year’s contest. (more…)

It was Gilmer High School’s first home playoff football game since 1997 as the Bobcats played host to the Tigers of Troup County. Troup was coming in with a record of 6-4 to face a resilient Bobcat squad who posted an 8-2 record on the year. Despite being 14-point underdogs, the Bobcats stepped up with big plays and a stingy defense that held its ground, giving Gilmer the 26-22 victory in the first round of the GHSA playoffs. (more…)

Catamounts Claim Championship: Troup Will Make Trip

The Gilmer High School Bobcats football team faced off with the Dalton Catamounts for the second time in the 2013. The rematch was for the Region 7-AAAA Championship. Dalton took the first meeting 31-0 at Dalton, the Bobcats’ lone loss on the season. The Bobcats, hosting the game due to a yearly rotation between North and South Sub-regions, was looking for revenge against the Region rival, especially after rumor spread that the Championship Trophy had been delivered pre-game to Dalton by the G.H.S.A.; a rumor confirmed when Dalton delivered the trophy to Huff Mosley Field. Despite the extra motivation, the home team “Cats” could not pull out the win, as the Catamounts claimed the championship with a 24-10 win. The loss by the Bobcats gives Gilmer second place in the region and a home playoff match up with Troup County, the third place team from Region 5. (more…)
