Fundamentals Fail “Cats:” Marist Moves On

“Wrap up!” and “Block, please!” were the common phrases coming from the sidelines during Gilmer High School’s second round football playoff match-up against Marist. Missed tackles, missed blocks, and false starts plagued the “Cats” throughout the game and made the 38-0 Marist win, more lopsided than it actually was. (more…)

It was Gilmer High School’s first home playoff football game since 1997 as the Bobcats played host to the Tigers of Troup County. Troup was coming in with a record of 6-4 to face a resilient Bobcat squad who posted an 8-2 record on the year. Despite being 14-point underdogs, the Bobcats stepped up with big plays and a stingy defense that held its ground, giving Gilmer the 26-22 victory in the first round of the GHSA playoffs. (more…)

Catamounts Claim Championship: Troup Will Make Trip

The Gilmer High School Bobcats football team faced off with the Dalton Catamounts for the second time in the 2013. The rematch was for the Region 7-AAAA Championship. Dalton took the first meeting 31-0 at Dalton, the Bobcats’ lone loss on the season. The Bobcats, hosting the game due to a yearly rotation between North and South Sub-regions, was looking for revenge against the Region rival, especially after rumor spread that the Championship Trophy had been delivered pre-game to Dalton by the G.H.S.A.; a rumor confirmed when Dalton delivered the trophy to Huff Mosley Field. Despite the extra motivation, the home team “Cats” could not pull out the win, as the Catamounts claimed the championship with a 24-10 win. The loss by the Bobcats gives Gilmer second place in the region and a home playoff match up with Troup County, the third place team from Region 5. (more…)

Good Night for Gilmer: “Cats” Run Over River Ridge Knights 37-13

In a game that the Bobcats slipped up in last year, Gilmer High School’s football team looked to not repeat history this time around as the “Cats” faced the Knights of River Ridge on Senior Night. Gilmer was coming off one of the most exciting games of the year, beating rival Pickens in dominating fashion and wanted to continue that momentum into this game. Gilmer would overcome a sluggish start and poured on the points in the second half, taking the win 37-13. (more…)

“Cats’” Defense Derails Dragons: Gilmer Wins 17-0

On a chilly Friday night in North Georgia, the Gilmer High School Bobcats football team hosted the region rival Pickens High School Dragons. Gilmer, coming off of a win against Cass, was looking to win its sixth game of the year. Pickens was coming off of a loss to Cedartown, and hoped to get back on track with a win against the “Cats.” In a game that was close throughout, the Dragons faltered down the stretch allowing the Bobcats to pull away, 17-0, for the fifth straight win against the Dragons. The Gilmer High School Bobcats football team traveled to Cass High School to take on the Colonels. Coming off of a bye week, Gilmer was ready to take the field and fight for a win. It was homecoming night for Cass, but the Colonels would fall to the strong option attack of the “Cats,” as Gilmer cruised to a 30-13 win. (more…)

The Gilmer High School Bobcats football team held its annual end of the year banquet. The team celebrating a rare eight plus win season, plus a playoff birth, had a special speaker for the night. The All-Region football team for Region 7-AAAA was released on Monday.

Among the Gilmer players selected on the first team were fullback Tyler Bertolini, wide receiver Connor Webber, tight end Austin Cole, defensive lineman Garrett Ralston, and defensive backs Colt Henderson and Cameron Kephart.

The Gilmer Bobcats’ football team ended the spring season with its annual “Purple and White”Game. The white team won the defensive battle 7-0 when Austin Sprayberry recorded a sack on fourth and 10, ending the purple’s night, like the credits came on after an episode of “Barney.” (more…)
